        Hi Dion,

Nice one. I've heard some stories about these too: they were awarded by the Kaiser, or they were given as posthumous awards to widows of fallen heroes. In my opinion they were just luxury private purchase crosses, for those who wanted something a cut above the rest.

Want to sell it? Drop me a line
        Best regards,

is the crown, date and W on yours silver? Mine is more gold:

Nice cross, I wouldn't mind that in my collection too. Is it cased?

          Best regards,

              Question--
Would the enamel be polished when these were new?
This is the second example I have seen with the matte, scratched core.

I've examined a 100% genuine, Kaiser-presented EKI (to his nephew, Prince Sigismund) which was just a regular, engraved vaulted EKI. Logic would dictate that if anyone would get one of these luxury EKIs from the Kaiser, it would be a Hohenzollern prince.

As for the matte enamel; I expect it was used because it approximated the look of standard crosses and also because matte enamel is more durable than glossy.

I have to look it up, but isn't a set of AWS shiny enamel ek's given by the Kaiser on at least one occasion? I thought it was shown in one of the German ek books.

                  Best regards,
                  Michel

                    Interesting.

The the dark finish looks to be a niello process more than a glass enamel.

Where did you find this info regarding enamel durability?

Also, fired glass enamel would be glossy. The fused glass would have a textured but glossy look even before being struck flat and polished.

IMO this cross is done in niello fashion.

Having it in hand I tend to agree. You can clearly see some spots where it is broken out. Is that possible with Niello? Also I think the crown, cypher and year are made of gold leaf, or something similar. But I have to put it under microscope.
