Btw the medal is not magnetic and I believe it is silver.

Probably a spangenstueck. Can you show us a shot of the rim.

          Dear experts,

I have a similar example to resolve.
Obviously not massive silver but plated.
          A Spangenstück?
These are my only pics for the moment.

          Thanks in advance,
          taube.

              Hello Taube:

Both pieces were not officially-struck and awarded pieces.

The first piece that you show is interesting. It appears to have possibly been die-struck, but it is difficult to determine this without inspecting it in person.

The second piece that you show is a commonly-encountered "Spangenstück" that was base-metal that was silver-plated. These pieces are older and may have been purchased by veterans. I do know for a fact that veteran replacement medals were available for purchase through the veteran's organization through the 1950's. I do not know exactly what they looked like however.

So, there are real "Spangenstück" that exist. There are also now recently-made copies of this medal.

The best "Spangenstück" pieces were made by the Bavarian Mint. They are not commonly encountered. I am not certain when they were made, but they were made sometime probably from the 1930's to 1950's. The Bavarian Mint stated that they have no records pertaining to them. So more information is not known.

              Best regards,

Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge.
I had an eye on #2 but if it is a possible 50ies produce I will pass.

                Cheers,

All I can add to Rangemaster's evaluation is they are not very popular amung collectors, probably because one can hardly distinguish the "real" ones from the "fakes".

Unless they're really cheap, I'd rather safe my money for the real deal - the silver WW1 medals aren't extremely expensive after all!
