It's a fake! Send it to me for closer evaluation. We'll put it up on eBay for $9.99.

If there any maker marks on the cross or on the Ring?

I just got this STONE MINT cross from an ancient collection. The tiny flecks are from the scanner. The enamel is a PERFECT, mirror finish with NO flaws. I am in love. Ah, 1870...

I present, Das Verdienst Kreuz fur Frauen und Jungfraen!"

            Enjoy,

These are among the most beautiful of the German decorations, in my opinion. Difficult to find without enamel damage. I would love to see yours! If you want to learn more I suggest getting The Iron Time by Previtiera. Great book. Do post photos of yours - always good to see one!

I've posted mine before, but here it is again. It's the same example pictured in The Iron Time.

At the risk of being redundant, for the benefit of members who have not had the opportunity to see one of these crosses first hand, I would like to concentrate on one of the several facets that make them so truly spectacular. The engraving on the reverse, coupled with the glass like finish of the black enamel must be seen to be fully appreciated.
