Is this piece pre-ww1 as the date says? And what was it for?

Im just tryng to determine when this was awarded and to whom received it. Thank you in advance. I have two of them and not a clue what they were for. They definitely look old. How is the condition?

        Franco-Prussian war.

It should be engraved on the side, from conquered cannon.

Wow that's actually really cool. I really like these now. I like that the combatant version medals were made from cannons they conquered. If I were a soldier awarded one of these I would be so proud to wear it. Thank you so much for the help and link.

              Hi Omar,

This is called a "Kriegsdenkmünze" or just KDM and was a participant medal for the Franco-Prussian War. Originals (awarded) had the inscription on the rim, but private-purchase copies do not.

It looks like you might have the wrong ribbon on there, and a small repair. The correct ribbon is this one (top photo).

For every major Prussian war starting in 1813, a participant medal was issued. Most of them came in different variations (combatant, non-combatant, etc). The so-called Hindenburg Cross is the final one in the series that was actually awarded, although the planned medal for WWII was apparently minted and copies do exist somewhere. They look like this (second photo) although this is probably a fake:

Ok, very interesting. I apologize for the sideways pic, I promise its straight up and down before it uploads. No clue why its doing that. I'm sure its quite aggravated but totally not intentional. Thank you for the help it is very much appreciated. I have two of these medals and oddly enough both have the same ribbon, and both have the engraved writing on the outer edge. Mine look like they're in really rough shape, any idea what would have roughened these up besides age. They have black areas like burn marks. Were they just crudely made?

So those that were minted were never issued? Those would be the ones to look for I suppose. I have a black honor cross that I think was issued to next of kin. I wonder if thats what the one you showed were for.

                      Hi mate,

I think your ribbons are discoloured- age + time does that.
I don't they're crudely made, although basic. They do tend to exhibit wear.

                      Cheers,

                      Jamie

                        Hi Kosah,

Me thinks all has been said. I don't want to be negative but if you type in the text on the medal in google search:

                        dem siegreichen heere 1870 1871

then the first 10! (not factorial ) will give you the answer, especially if you do a NCR search.

Here are some sites that surface:

                        http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kriegsd...sches_Reich%29

                        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_Com...dal_of_1870/71

                        http://www.ehrenzeichen-orden.de/deu...-18701871.html

So I always am a little bit surprised at these sort of questions. "What does this mean?"

I am also lazy (recently been) but google gave me ALL the answers:

                        http://www.ehrenzeichen-orden.de/deu...07-2-form.html

Next you can always ask if it is legit. No problems, that is what this forum is about, help each other to spot fakes and so on. So does your medals show the text "Aus eroberte geschutz" or something? Is there no rim text and is it an accepted medal bar replacement? Is it an utter fake?

So first use the tools to do your research, you will gain more respect in my eyes (however that is completely subjective )

                        Kisses from Holland,
                        Michel.

P.S. what is your name anyway?
