Crown design appears to be Bulgarian.

It is the shoulder strap insignia of the Infanterie regiment 72. Do a google search or check "Imperial German Army Handbook 1914-1918" by D.B. Nash page 118 second row.

They use this Bulgarian crown and Cypher.

          Best regards,
          Michel

Thank you very much gentlemen! Excellent help!!

So, it is the shoulder strap of Königlich Preussische 4. Thür. Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 72 or Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 72 or are these the same? I was unable to access the book as suggested, but would anyone know why they used Bulgarian royal insignia? Was it in recognition of King Ferdinand?

I know that there was Königlich Bayerisches 23. Infanterie-Regiment „König Ferdinand der Bulgaren“, did they have a similar strap?

            M.

King Ferdinand was honorary chief of the regiment. In the same way, in the Bulgarian army there were several regiments with honorary chiefs: the 22nd Infantry Reg. of Carl-Eduard /of saxe-Coburg Gotha, king Ferdinand's brother/; the 12th Infantry Reg. of Kaiser Wilhelm II, even a regiment to Grand Duchess Maria and others, too.

King Ferdinand was honorary chief of several more foreign regiments, like the following /plus 1-2 more/:

54th Minsk Regiment of the Russian army /ended in 1915, because of the war/

11 Imperial and Royal Hussars Regiment of the Austro-Hungarian army

                23rd Royal Bavarian infantry regiment
