    Machine gunners and machinegun sharpshooters...

    is there a site out there or a person who knows the nuances between the different kinds of WW1 MG units?
    It is all pretty confusing

    Hello,

    Maschinen-Gewehr-Kompagnien were part of the regular infantry units (in 1914 one per regiment, later one per battalion).

    Maschinen-Gewehr-Scharfschützen-Abteilungen were separate heavy MG units that were attached to divisional sectors.

      Hi Jan,

      That bit I understood, but how were they attached? How mobile were the MGSSAs? did they have the same ratio of heavy and light machine guns?
