      Hi Dave,

Many thanks for posting this. The RAO4 is supposed to be a valuable early type (1854-1879) but it's actually a known fake. Authentic pieces of this type can bring up to $750, so it's an attractive one to fake (as opposed to WWI types, which sell for about half that). On the fake the eagle painting is crude and the quality is not up to scratch. Here's a comparison of eagle medallions.

Trevor is right. This version was already descriped as a fake in Orden & Militaria-Magazin Nr. 75 from December 1996 in an article written by Dr. Sauerwald.
Beside the poor eagle-painting, the big ball suspension is a first sign for alert.
Take a view on the surface through a microscope, you will see that the cross and the medaillons (they are made seperate, right ?) are casted.
Also the "golden" parts of the eagle are not painted correctly, they were first painted in yellow and some gold-dust was added before covering with varnish.
The same faker made also 3rd classes and both classes with swords.

          Regards
          Markus

Sorry i watched your shop - You have some mistakes inside.

S-W is not sylvester wagner, it`s SY and Wagner Berlin Hofjuweliere,

The württemberg FO is not a grand cross, its a knight 2nd. class late
              war typ. (silver gilt)

is the godet piece really marked 935/1000 ?

The bar with the golden military merit cross + i.c. on non combatant ribbon
              couldn`t be period...

Very heartening to see a dealer willing to put his items on the forum for discussion and be willing to accept the bad news so gracefully. I'll definitely be browsing your site.
