    German sword help

    Hello forum

I saw this sword at a yard sale about an hour ago. I took a few photos with my lousy camera phone, and these are the only two that are visible.

they wanted $1500 firm for it. I thought they were crazy.... but... I think the handle might be gold? It sure looked like gold.

the blade said something 1888 Potsdam? There was some markings on the spine of the blade as well... likely maker.

did they ever use gold (besides plating) on handles?

I did not buy the sword.... but can head back if it might be worth it.

    thanks for the help Robert

Is that a Damascus blade? With that inscription, there should be some initials of the owner on it somewhere.

I can't see what pattern of damascus blade it has, maybe rosebud? Photo is too blurry (sorry, I know it is a cell phone camera).

It might be a grosse size sword, which would of course be more valuable.

The hilt is brass, with gilting on it. It is not solid gold.

We're obviously missing the full inscription, as you've pointed out. All I can see is the "in memory of Potsdam 1888".

A grosse size lionhead sword with a damascus blade in good condition would be worth way more than $1,500, if that's what the sword truly is. I trust there is a scabbard with the sword? I can't judge the scale/size of the sword by the two photos you've provided, unfortunately.

I'd also like to learn what the full inscription is, and if there is also an inscription panel on the other side of the blade. Any initials on the langet of the crossguard?

            All the Best,

            Alan

              thanks guys for the help

yesterday... they yanked the sword out of the garage and it was $1500 firm.

I went back today... and they sold it for $500.

The blade is not Damascus. It appears to be named. I am still fairly sure the spine is gold on the handle? I of course won't clean it up.

              here are some quick photos.

              thanks again Robert
