    WW1 Marine Infantry Photos

The first four belonged to one man, and he and his friends can be seen scattered through them. This undated photo is probably from 1915, and shows the new recruits resplendent in the pre-war blues still being used in basic training during the first half of the war.

Here's a casual squad shot, taken in Flanders 1 July 1916. The mixture of Field Gray Marine tunics and naval blue is fairly typical. Note that as Imperial troops, the Marines, like the sailor, wear ONLY the Reichs cockade, on the white band of their field caps. Two of the Marines are wearing covers over the white band.

This field parade, taken later that July, makes quite a contrast between the Litzen-bedecked and dazzling white piped pre-war Feldgrau tunics and the scruffy midwar leg-wear! The super-sized "3"s on the covered shakos are almost cartoonish. The original owner identifies all these 1916 shots as 9th Company, 3rd Sea Battalion, 3rd Marine Infantry Regiment.

This unrelated, undated Marine photo is of a 1st Company's "Sportfest."

              Nice pics, Rick,

Not high-decorated, studio-portraitet officers, but "real" pictures from the "real" live of the soldiers.

              Best regards

              Daniel

Hi Rick, nice photos, the regular soldat is often forgotten!
