He has a nice little WWI memorial. Was this person a relative?
In addition to the photo with the description of his unit (Württemberg Pionier Bataillon Nr. 13), you have a postwar medal bar consisting of an Iron Cross 2nd class, a Württemberg Wilhelmskreuz mit Schwerter für Kriegsverdienst and a Frontkämpferkreuz (from 1934). In addition you have a black wound badge (1-3 wounds) and a Württemberg Landwehr long service bar.
In the photo the soldier has collar lace and he is carrying the officer's style sword knot, so he is either the rank of Vizefeldwebel or Feldwebel (senior NCOs).

Ulm has a long tradition of army units till today.
I live ~ 60 km far of it.
In Germany you would get 150 - 200 EUR for this lot.

He should keep it in the family, but, many of the young today have no interest in their family history and see these items as old things that they can't relate to. For them it's just stuff to maybe make a few dollars off of. Perhaps with the hundred year anniversary of the beginning WW1 coming up next year, there will be a renewed interest. I personally keep throwing stuff at my grand kids, in hopes that something will stick. Our family history includes veterans from both sides and both world wars, including Jews and members of the SS! How could anyone not want to know that kind of history? I keep telling my grand kids that this history is how we got here and why we are who we are. If you want to know who you are and why the world is the way it is, then you must know history, especially your own family's.

SteelhelmJim is correct reguarding the kids of today not caring about family heritage. Here in Canada native culture is dwindelling because of lack of interest of the kids of today. Traditions and culture are going to be lost when the elders pass away if the kids of today don't take an interest
