thanks guys for the awesome help.

anyone been able to figure out what those metal plates are?

I think they are machine gun related, and maybe mounted to the receiver?

Can anyone give me any information as to the type/model of the gasmask can that is seen on the left of the photo of the two?

I would love to see a photo of it's latch and indside lid.

I have seen cans like this in a photo or two, but I do not think that any of my books on WWI German equipment ID these.

      Thanks.

        Robert,

I think you may be right about these pieces being off of an MG08. Take a look at the highlighted area on this photo (borrowed from Fritz Lorenz's excellent website mg08/15.de). I don't own an MG08, so perhaps Hoss or someone else who does can verify this, but the shape looks the same and the rivet holes are in the same place as on your pieces.

Makes sense in a way. 1500 meters is rather a short range for field artillery but not MGs or minenwuerfers.

I think I read that the deeper lids were added to the shorter Gummimaske cans, recycling them so that they could be reissued with the GM17 mask.
