WW1 Cut-out. Real badge- fake cut-out???

(Thread also in wound badge forum- then I thought "Poll- we need a Poll!" So I moved the thread here because I would've needed to restart the thread anyhow. At least with a Pole I can gauge more opinions).


Hi guys,

I bought this badge last year and recently a friend gave it a good look.

He believes the badge to be real, but the cut-out faked or a real badge turned faked cut-out.

The edges are very rough, rough enough to be able to see a black shard of metal. Surprised I checked the dealers site I bought it from and found that I could see the rough edges. These first pictures are from the dealers own site. Now I own another Cut-out the difference in the quality and smoothness is night and day.

Everyone (even dealers:-)) make mistakes.

Anyhow, could you please give me your opinions. If mores pics are required I can add some tommorrow.

Should it have sharp shards of metal??? As seen in the picture.

It looks fine and the piece is period- but the Cut-out edges inside are very rough, if that's normal or even rare (but period) then I'm cool with that.
I'm not saying the entire piece is dodgy, just the Cut-out.

However, I have another which is totally smooth and now my mind his wondering whether someone Cut-out this one.

How were these made? Were they literally 'cut-out' at times, as this appears to be or stamped. The use of both methods would account for the two I have.

It looks fine to me.

Does it have smooth edges/back.
Mine is rather rough- but maybe had a crappy jeweller or maker, "the apprentice made mine maybe???"

BTW I don't mind the thread "hijack" it's all a learning process and anything gained is for the greater good or the need of the many outweigh the need of the few- whether it's Dickens or Spock the need is the same

You see the same type of spurs sometimes on WW2 combat badges. Believe it or not the Germans were not infallible as many think. They had good days and bad.

Having dug a lot of things out of the "woodwork" over the years, I'll gladly second that opinion!

Well that's great news. There is nothing more annoying than doubting the integrity of a piece.

Could this be a trench-art piece??? Is the piece 1914-18 period or possibly a piece altered for sale to Allied troops and "Trench tourists?"

It is rough.
Which is why both my friend and I raised an eyebrow originally.

Did they alter badges and awards???

Th badge wasn't instituted until March 1918, first awards probably made in April or May...

The cut out badges are private purchased ones, or some possibly private altered ones. If made in field or at home, after the war's end... who should know?

This one appears to be made of tombak, so post war. Issue badges were steel.
