Paul, I am no expert, but I do have Detlev Niemann's book which shows the backs of 6 different submarine badges, all of which show the pin being located much higher than your first badge, so it cannot be seen when viewed from the front.

Thanks Brent for that, yes I see what you mean. There an so many variations on these I do not think it could be discounted just on that alone. Anyone else have thoughts?

Second (hollow) example looks like a 1957 run by S&L. Aside from the already mentioned odd hardware placement on the first one- looking good IMO.
