From a very old New Zealand collection, also came with a MG Dog Tag.
I am thinking late war Don?

It appears to have suffered a hard life but I like it.

It looks like it is sewn to a piece of overcoat material. Notice the difference between it and the field gray backing of the badge. The backing cloth is too light in shade to be tunic material.

I should add the picture was taken in direct Australian sunlight.

The cloth it is sewn to is a pretty good match to a vet bought back pork pie cap (image inside with no sun or flash) I have, also note the massive variation in field gray, shoulder boards are a great example.

For sure there were many slight variations of gray wool used. There were some major variations too. Perhaps it is the lighting that makes the larger cloth look so light, but darkness of the backing on the patch looks like normal feldgrau and makes the piece of cloth look more like a stone gray. The early war overcoat material (pre-9/21/15 universal overcoat) was not feldgrau. The Germans called it simply "Manteltuch". It was lighter than feldgrau with no greenish hue to it.

There are still remnants of threads on it. It was applied with the paper backing as it can be seen from the holes on the back.
