Godet EKII under a ring light...

    Hello gents,

I just wanted to ask your opinions of these photos. The subject is a Godet with a sheet metal core. The first three photos are under a ring light. The last three photos are under incondescent lighting. With the incondescent lighting I'm fighting the bouncing back, or glaring, of the light off of the cross. Please give me your honest opinions as to which you like the most. I want to be able to present good photos for the viewers of this forum.

    Thank you in advance,
    Robert

Good close-up detail and very even lighting. No big
shadows. I have to say though. I think the ones done
with the incondescent light look a bit better but that's
just my opinion. I can see where you have to deal with the
glare coming back off the frame but the overall pic just looks
          better to me.

          Nicely done.

do you mind if i ask what kind of camera are you using?

            Thanks Greg,

That's what I wanted, an honest opinion. The only real benefit I see with the ring light is the date detail being easier to make out clearly. But, that's just me.

            Thank you for your opinion,
            Robert

To be honest Robert ,I have always found you to present good photos that are easy to veiw .But in relation to the test you present I would agree that the dates are easier to define with ring light (no glear from core surface) yet for me I just switch monitors to veiw "bright" photos
              Nice cross by the way

                  Ring light looks great

Can you show a photo of your setup and tell us the equipment you use? I'd love to mimic that look.
                  Best regards,

using a ring light some time now ..(if its the same you are using ? , )

found out one can accomplish astonishing results with it .
especially on maker mark close ups
and if there is no more day light it come in handy.

but if I want to capture the character of an cross , I use daylight only .

especially with enamel reflection becomes important.

                    regards kay

Yes, the ring light is easy to use. There are some ring lights which adapt/attach to your camera and go off when you shoot your picture. Unlike that type mine is independent of the camera and mounts to the table or wherever. The camera, a 5.0 megapixel Sony DSC-F717, fits right down into the circular ring light. It is held in place by my Slik camera tripod. I use a shudder control unit which plugs into my camera. Here is my setup. I don't know who the ugly guy shooting the picture is...

Edit: BTW, I have some synthetic difuser material tied to the bulb of my ring light so that there is no harsh light striking the subject I am shooting. It's a soft light hitting my subject.

these pictures where made with my old camera .
I found out that a dark background filters some of the artificial light out and improves the picture concerning the reflection a lot .

but maybe its just a personal thing .

here the differences one can play with .

but reflection from the underground is one thing I wryly try to avoid these day's

the blue canvas is perfect to do so .

I also tend to put the lamp a little of centre to create a little of ambiance .

sometimes it turns out to dark and has to be changed with a photo program a little.
