    two bars for review

I'm looking at these two medal bars and I'd like your opinion. Stitching on the first one is not perfect, should be this a concern?

The second one is Anhalt. I can't see anything really wrong here, but more experienced eye is very welcome. Thanks in advance for any opinions!

I don't see red flags on any of them!

I was too short for Anhalt bar, but got the Saxon one - here are better pics. The bar is tightly stitched, so I can't see maker's marks on EK2 ring (if any), but there's a mark on hindy cross. Any opinions about the maker of the bar (if identifiable)?

Check if the Saxe-Altenburg medal is bronze (not bronze-plated). It is already a good indication that the hole that the ribbon ring goes through is at 90 degrees to the obverse/reverse of the medal, not along them (from what i can see). The reason for this is that out of circa 15000 awards, only the first 500-600 were made out of pure bronze.

                    Regards,

                    Matthew

Great looking bar but I don't think you will be able to find out the maker of the bar.

Matthew, how can I tell if it's real bronze or bronzed zinc? It looks bronze to me, but I don't dare to scratch it.
Pierce, I also thought it wouldn't be possible to ID bar maker, but thought it maybe has some unique feature, known to experts.

Can anybody suggest a unit? I found 153rd Thuringian inf. reg. and 264th res. inf. reg. to be from Saxe-Altenburg. This is enlisted man's bar, correct?

If i'm seeing correctly that is a bronze FAM, so definitely an enlisted man. As for how to check if it is bronze, I don't know myself. Perhaps someone else who has more experience can chime in? What I do know is that the zinc versions have a far cruder ring attachment. I cannot show pics on this forum, still have to become an association member (its on my xmas wishlist), so here are a couple of links. There were four different types of the medal: pure bronze, bronzed zinc alloy, copper-plated zinc alloy and zinc (war metal).

Zinc version - please not the rough suspension system - http://www.ehrenzeichen-orden.de/deu...oek-26182.html

Copper-plated Zinc (unfortunately the suspension system looks the same as a pure bronze one) - http://www.medal-medaille.com/sold/p...oducts_id=2874

                          Pure bronze - http://gmic.co.uk/index.php/topic/27337-sax-altenburg/

Don't you DARE scratch it , a nice medal like that...

                          Regards,

                          Matthew

The Saxon award precedes the Saxe-Altenburg one, so more likely Saxon Army than Prussian Army. Saxony bordered Saxe-Altenburg, and there were exclaves of Saxe-Altenburg like Rußdorf and Neukirchen which were completely surrounded by Saxon territory. So quite a few Altenburgers ended up in Saxon regiments.

Matthew, thank you for great reference links! The suspension sistem is 90 degree - like pure bronze one, but due to chocolate red-brownish color (rather than more yellowish on pure bronze one) I think it's probably copper plated one. Of course I won't scratch it, but i didn't find any scratches or traces of discolorment, so maybe a pure one too?

Dave, thank you for your valuable input! Saxon regiment then!
