    Hate Belts

    Hey guys,
Please go to the belt and buckle forum and look at my thread on hate belts. Jean posted images of my favorite one. I feel it is a rather rare one.

Let me know what you think.
    Regards,
    Jody

I have one, from a U-Boat crew. Standard gold "Gott Mit Uns" buckle. Apparently every ship they sunk they picked a crew insignia off a corpse.

I never heard of a Uboot crewman putting one of these together. I'd like to see some pictures for sure.

I think Galicia takes the common term "hate belt" too literally. These belts were not the product of German endeavor but rather that of bored American doughboys during the post war occupation. They were a classic form of Americana...the tourist souvenier. Think in terms of the 1950's and the Airstream Travel trailer covered with decals and bumper stickers for every tourist attraction west of New Jersey.

Swapping buttons, etc was a common practice between dough boys and their fellows and allies as well as their former enemies. They weren't always restricted to buttons though I have seen one with a Prussian flyers badge on it and several with Iron Crosses attached.

Don't collect them but had one years ago. It even had an EK1 on it. I kept the EK so you will not see it on this picture. It had NCO buttons and some various state tunic buttons as well. Wish I had kept it. Steve
