    Original 'Occupy Movement'

As most of you probably know, there were numerous revolutions which took place in Europe in 1848-49, so if you thought the occupy movement was something new, think again. In the grand duchy of Baden they called out the troops, who dutifully opened fire on their countrymen, a deed for which they were decorated with the so-called 'Brudermordmedaille', or the killing-one's-brother medal. The medal is not scarce, but I've never seen the document before I found this one on ebay.

It's interesting, Vince. At Thanksgiving I was speaking with a bunch of folks about the Occupy Movement, and I likened it to 1848 also. A small liberal protest spreads to many different countries, where aims are all similar but not identical. Various governments respond with different levels of force. It's very, very similar in many ways.

Very cool! I've never seen the document for that particular medal. I find it surprising how cheaply one can still purchase the 1848 medals. You would think the demand would be a bit higher.

Interesting observation…and the recent revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and now in Syria (the so-called Arab Spring) also come to mind when I think about the European revolutions of 1848, otherwise known as the “Spring of Nations”. Just goes to show that history can indeed repeat itself.

I think this is a good illustration to show the medal:
