Strange 1914 EK 2

A friend of mine bought a set of two 1914 EK2's...one was to finish a medal bar that was incomplete. It was easily original but he also got this one.

It has a plate mounted ribbon ring loop on the top. The rest of the cross seems original enough with a quick look, but does anyone else recognize this set up? Could it have been a period repair of some sort?

These are the photos he sent of it, but any opinions are appreciated.

In my opinion a typical period repair. Was on many 1870 EK2 as well, but after reinforcements the 1914 rings didn´t break off that often than the 1870 ones

Hope he didn´t pay to much for it

after reinforcements the 1914 rings didn´t break off that often than the 1870 ones

UNLESS.. they were drunk and got their medals caught in the car door Like this one.
