Hi,
a small ring could be used on a medal bar (or on a watch chain or on a nail on the wall ).
You'll probably never know why it was done. The cross is a good one

Nice one Alex, loads of character, a real old warrior that one, I like it a lot

Michel is right, this core was used all over the place, K & also R marked pieces come to mind.
