Double Named and dated EK 1 - IR24

Hi,
Here is my today find .
Its a nice EKI , I guess a gift for Christmas 1917.
The unit is probably the 10 Kie of the IR 24 , the Brandenburg Regiment which had taken Douaumont Fort, in Verdun 1916.
I would like to read your opinions about this engraving and its meaning..

- what is the meaning of : "s/l"
- Is it really a gift ?
- Who offered and who received the gift ?
-Do you think the 2 soldiers were in the same Company, the 10./24 IR ?

I am a little concerned about the engraving. The cross has a nice
dark patina on the back. The patina also shows IN the 800 silver
stamp but the the engraving does not have that same patina.

I am thinking that the engraving was done at a later date.

That was my 1st thought as well. Here's the thread on period engraving that may help you out.

I understand your feelings.

I think the very close photograph does increase the effect of the engraving and I have not the same opinion in real.
The engraving is very smooth while touching with a finger and there is no sharp edge.

What I can say is that this EK was found at least 30 years ago in France by the father of the friend who sold it to me.
Maybe did he clean it before ? I will ask him.

Any idea on " s/l" and my others questions ?

Correct, and an unusual dedication on an EK. This sort of thing is most often seen on Studentika pieces. The style of engraving looks good, but who knows when it was done?

so this is Heyn who got the EK1 , and not Müller ...

A friend lent me last week the IR 24 history book for ww1, but I didn't find any mentions of the two names, as officers or as killed in action.

That angle does make it appear to have patina in the engraving.
It does make me feel better about the cross.

In France, items from the IR24 are very collectible due to the association with Douaumont. Hopefully, it is a happy coincidence, but it also could be an enhancement made to vastly improve the value of the cross.

Maybe you are right but IR24 is famous for its 1916 fights, but far less for 1918.
The two names are not in the IR24 book.

If the name have been "Von Brandis", ok...

I have access to the 1926 Ehrenrangliste and don't believe there is neither a Mueller nor a Heyn in the entry for IR24.
