    Meybauer EK1

This one is new (ish) to my collection.

Although I have in the past been an apologist for cleaning (and even polishing), I did not do this myself. Someone before me did it. But I think it looks nice.

    Any comments welcome.

    Best regards,

              Nice one Trevor

              Richard,
"500" marked backplates are fairly common on Meybauer pieces.

                  Hi guys,

Thanks for all the nice comments.

Michel, this disc is not marked "PM," but is the type usually encountered on these crosses. I agree that finding them with the Meybauer shield and the 500 800 900 marks is less common than finding them unmarked, and I passed up a number of these over the years waiting for the right one (at the right time). I think there is some speculation that all "PM" marked discs are recent forgeries, and I don't have any reason to doubt that.

Richard, as Greg says, the "500" mark is commonly encountered on this device. I suspect it is because this part is in a stressed position -- tighten the nut too much, and a soft metal would bend:

I believe that lower silver-content metals tend to be more rigid, as they are alloyed with harder metals.

Vince, thanks for the nice offer, but I am keeping this one in my collection of masterful Latvian forgeries .

                      Hi Trevor,

I guess I was to fast in posting. The hand was quicker then the eye

As a non native English speaker, do you doubt them or not ?

                      Anyway very nice cross!

                      Best regards,

                        Trevor

Happy St. Nicholas Day (Sinterklaas) Hope You Opened Your Little Present Last Night.......?

                        Nice Cross..

You Have it Assembled to 'show' the 500 Back Plate.......

I'm Sure that it would have been assembled as below - in order that the Thick Uniform material could be Accommodated.....

However I have seen Many EK1s with Screwbacks assembled the Reverse Way....... What was the Considered Practice?

(That is Not Really Cleaned and Polished...... I Have Some - Much More Sparkly......!)

Trevor, you have a nice cross there with one of the (to me) acceptable Meybauer marking combinations - makers mark on the reverse but NO PM on the disc. Another acceptable combination (to me) is a PM on the disc but NO maker's mark on the reverse. Finding a cross with all markings - specifically the crest on the reverse AND a PM silver content marked disc is to me a huge red flag. I have not seen a genuine example with that combination - at least not before all the suspect eBay discs started appearing a few years ago.

No personal offence meant Trevor, but re speculation that ALL "PM" marked discs are recent forgeries I'll state my personal opinion quite clearly - BOLLOCKS - FALSE - UNTRUE - INCORRECT! Further, I believe it's a dangerous stance to take as it will imo lead to genuine examples being labelled fake (then again, maybe I should just shut up and start buying them cheap!). For example, some of the other states EK1 equivalent screwbacks ONLY have a DRGM+63xxxx PM marked disc. It seems some decent fakes on eBay recently have some running scared. If you study the font of the genuine PM stamping, the fake/suspect ones can be picked out.

There's an old thread on one of the forums where I loaded a pic of 7 Meybauer screwdiscs, including a 100% genuine DRGM 900 PM example (from a Prussian EK1). Two of PM marked discs in that image have even been jeweller repaired (re-threaded) they have been that well worn!

                          Regards
                          Mike

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!

Here is mine with PM marked nut that I know is not a recent fake. It recieved good comments from several of the folks commenting here.

                              http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=433653

I think the cores are the same on mine and the one shown here, just mine is a little more worn. The silver content is different on the cross and back plate, but the same on the nut.

Anyway, very nice Meybauer! I Like!!!!!
