    Maker Mark 'O' ?

I have seen an EKI 1914 for sale on a dealers website that is marked with an O just below the catch - I have also seen one Thrid Reich civil award maked in the same way. Is this a known maker?

The "o" is just an aid to production, showing a worker what is the reverse of a badge. Probably used more by S&L than others.

There would be other ways to interpret an "O" marking below a catch on an Imperial EK.

      1) it may be a partial KO stamping - often this mark is weak on one side or the other

      2) I have an O (or zero) marking stamped above an 800 marked on the left arm of an EK1.

      The S&L TR/post-WW2 "marking" is more commonly raised. I don't think I know of a WW1 vintage (as opposed to 30s/40s) S&L EK1.

Pics of the cross would confirm what you have.

Based on the core and hardware, I'm guessing it's a poorly marked KO. I think I can see the top of a K to the left of the O. The O seems to be pretty heavily stamped though, so I could be wrong.

Thanks Mike - I seem to remember that Jamie Cross had an award on his website ( I think it was a German Eagle Order without swords but it's gone now) that had a well defined O stamped on the back just behind the pin, and that's what made me think it might be a known maker mark.

This is a stamped oval "0", not the small round, raised, "o" I was referring to as a position mark. Sorry for the confusion.

That's OK Leroy, no problem. I have an EKI 1957 version the has the small raised o at top centre of the frame to show where the ring would be fitted if the frames were used to make a second class cross.
