I have seen an EKI 1914 for sale on a dealers website that is marked with an O just below the catch - I have also seen one Thrid Reich civil award maked in the same way. Is this a known maker?

Maker Mark 'O' ?

There would be other ways to interpret an "O" marking below a catch on an Imperial EK.
1) it may be a partial KO stamping - often this mark is weak on one side or the other
2) I have an O (or zero) marking stamped above an 800 marked on the left arm of an EK1.
The S&L TR/post-WW2 "marking" is more commonly raised. I don't think I know of a WW1 vintage (as opposed to 30s/40s) S&L EK1.
Pics of the cross would confirm what you have.

Based on the core and hardware, I'm guessing it's a poorly marked KO. I think I can see the top of a K to the left of the O. The O seems to be pretty heavily stamped though, so I could be wrong.
