Don, That is kind of what I was figuring. I picked it up in Stuttgart years ago when I first started my addiction to Imperial awards. At the time I bought it there was a 1914 cross in this case, but I always suspected it originally held an 1870 EK2. The seller also said that prism glass lids were very early and probably for an 1870 cross. Maybe this is from 1880's - 1890's...???
I have seen this type of case with an 1870 EK2 in it for sale on Weitze, as I recall. I think the best answer is that it was probably made (or used) for both, although that is kind of a guess. It certainly is a great case...
Best regards,
Streptile
Looking for ROUND BUTTON 1939 EK1 Spange cases (LDO or PKZ)
Great case Brad, I've only seen one other like it, in Black, with the same beveled glass, it contained an 1870 piece.
I've come across a few different types of glass cases for 1914's but not with this style of glass.
Here's one I came across, made for hanging on the wall.
