I personally like these all Brass crosses. I've heard them referred to as... propaganda pieces, theatrical props, home made, made in France at wars end to feed the need for souvenirs and many more that I can't think of.
At the end of the day, unknown, but the workmanship is nice and I like the pebbled core, to me they could well be period items, even if they're not, I think they should be in every serious collectors chest.
Great find in fantastic shape.

My opinion is that these were made in France just after the war and sold to Doughboys looking for a souvenir before getting on the boat on their way back home.
I read a 1919 Stars and Stripes article that warned Doughboys of reproduction EKs being made in Paris in order to meet the high demand for them.
Notice the crown, very much resembles the Napoleonic era crown and I think could only be of French production.
Here is a Napoleonic “N” and crown cartridge box mount found along Napoleon’s 1813 retreat route near Hanau, Germany. See the similarities in both the EK and the 1813 crown. I think 2nd Empire crowns were similar. (stylized eagles in the crown)
I’ve never owned one of these crosses, but just like fat girls, everyone should try one ...at least once……

Maybe I need to put my glasses on, but to me it looks like there are stylized eagles on the EK crown. Of course not having the piece in my hand it is hard to say. I think we all have seen other EK IIs that have more distinct eagles on the crowns. These are the ones that I think are possibly the post-war French types.
Anyway, I thought that this was one of the EKs with what appear to be the French Napoleonic style eagles on the crown. But, maybe not.
I just cannot help but think about that 1919 Stars and Stripes article about fake EKs being made in Paris. Some of these 1-piece types must be from that, but which ones? Maybe they made "fakes" in Germany too to supply occupation troops. That does sound surprising since millions of them made - probably just not available in quantity to souvenir collectors and their suppliers around Coblenz.
Of course they makes fake WW I EKs today too, but most of the ones I have seen are cheap one-piece lead alloy things.......Who knows…….
Anyway, it is an interesting EK and subject. Maybe some light will be shed on these in the future.

PS. I also wanted to use this as an excuse to post a piece from my Napoleonic collection.
