    1861 dated German Military Backpack

My dad has the complete uniform to go with this.
He has wondered, since this is something you don't run across everyday, what the market value might be.
    Any help appreciated!

Well, up to 1863 the backpack straps were white buff leather. This looks a lot like a Model 1887 Haversack which was worn right up to 1918. A number inside does not always mean a date, especially when the German habit is to place a full date, not a half date. Two to three numbers usually indicates an inventory nr. IE. I have a set of Fuß Artillerie Binoculars which are clearly 1st war, yet they have a stamp "1814" on them. The number is not the date obviously. Tony

OK. Thanks for clearing that up!
I do not think this is a WWI era pack because my dad has one of those, and it does not look at all the same. This looks more like the pack used in an original Franco-Prussian war era photo of his. Maybe a different variation?
