Russian St.Georgiy Cross for Prussian Soldier

    This is Russian St.Georgiy Cross № 39867.
In russian archives there are some data about this cross:
"By this cross was awarded prussian unterofficer without portupee Carl von Mortein in 1816 from prussian 4 artillery brigade.
The cross was not returned to the russian Orden Capitul"

The rank in russian called - "podpraporschik"
The name may be "Mortein" or "Morteyn"

Who can find any information about this man?
Who can say in wich battles could took part prussian 4 artillery brigade?

Thank You for help, Alex Ponomarev.

Hi, please excuse me for messing in your posting, I can give no information, but have a question - the infornation says that the medal has not been returned to somewhere - why? Did the orders have to be returned to the State at some time or what?

Yes, by the status of the order of St.Georgiy the orders have to be returned to the State Orden Capitul(Depository) after death of recipient.
Like some orders in many Germany States.

        Hi Alex,

        niiice old George cross!!!

But I wonder abut the returning!
As far as I know the George crosses given to Prussian soldiers in the Napoleonic wars should be kept in Prussia and be inherited in the Regiment like the EK´s. - means if a recipient died another one who was listed in the "heritage list" was awarded the cross. In 1838 all members of that lists got the permission to wear it and some new crosses were made that everyone could get one.
So I wonder how it should worf with returning the cross.

        Best regards

        Daniel

          Hi Daniel!!!

          About returning:

This cross was established in 1807.
By status of order after death of recipient the cross must be returned to the russian order capitul.
I don't know about foreigner recipients.
But every cross had a number(it's unusual for germany orders) and all recipients entered in "Alltimes list of recipients of order of St.Georg".

After a "krimian war" (1853-1855) the status was changed, and if a recipient died the cross keep in family.

And only recipient could wear St.Georg cross, not inheritors!

          Best regards
