But the horribly scribbly scrap of paper is some rough draft for Lord knows what, not a "citation."
Here (and I know this is too blurry to read, I have had to reduce it for Forums scan size limitations, but wanted to preserve the format and "style" as completely as possible is a combination forwarding letter AND citation text for a 1914 EK2 just finding its way to the newly amputee recipient in 1915:
I've had to crop out the recipient's name (Hauptmann Alois Louis of Bavarian Inf Rgt 14), but you get an idea of headings, the Official Gobbledygook of file reference numbers and so on, and the official seal and signatures and all that sort of stuff on an "issue" citation
And here is Louis's award citation text:
"His Excellency the Commanding
General had in the name of
His Majesty the German
Emperor Captain and
Company Chief Louis 14 I R
in recognition of his brave
conduct on the 20th and 25th
of August 1914 the Iron
Cross 2nd Class awarded.
A presentation
of the enclosed decoration
to Capt. Louis
is requested."
(Louis was receiving private medical care after being shot through both legs as commander of the regimental machine gun company, and would lose one leg below the knee-- though that did not prevent further service in either WW1 or WW2. So the Commanding General had no idea where Louis WAS to pass on the award and bestowal document.)
The handwriting may look "horrible" to those with difficulty reading it, but it is NEAT, TIDY... and duly stamped and signed for.
What Jens has is some sort of rough draft recommendation for an award SCRAP. The recipient of that Iron Cross may have WRITTEN it, rather than received it, since there is no actual mention of WHAT was being recommended, let alone to whom... or by whom.
Ok ok, not really a "citation" but still nice.
I search now for any informations about the name of this officer who also fought at the Frezenberg, Flanders and at the Somme with his guns. Thanks!
Great set, Jens! I also have an identical W&S ek1, but yours is in better shape and i have nooo papers to go with it, so in the end.. You win 100-0. You have added that to the stats, right?
