You can see on Rob's very nice pre-1889 Garde helmet that even when aged, they tend to go a dark copper color. I clean mine about once a year, using the guidelines I developed in my web site on headgear preservation here: http://www.kaisersbunker.com/preservation/index.htm
But no, no oil or any other substance. Just keep it out of the sun and control the humidity. TonyComment

If you remove the star and eagle its a Silvery Golden colour ,the helmet came with a spike base but no cruciform spike ,the eagle was sitting next to it as the next lot at a local general auction ,I left a bid of £120 for the helmet and £35 for the Eagle and got them both . Their are extra holes behind the star plate and under the spike .the chinscales need rebuilding and the crown on the eagle is dented ,apart from all that I dont think £150 was too bad ,RobGod please take justin bieber and gave us dio backComment
