    A navy photo:May 28, 1908

I got this yesterday-due to size restrictions I had to cut off the two cuff braids (but no crown visable!?). I can't read what's on the back, nor do I have any navy ranklists. perhaps some kind person can help me id this chap?

      Non-Line Officer

      Jeff,
I do not have a 1908 naval Rangliste but judging from the velvet collar and the lack of crowns on the cuff he is probably a naval engineer officer or possibly a medical officer - a Marine-Stabsingenieur or Marine-Stabsarzt.

I'd say he's definitely a Marine-Stabsarzt-- the blue fuzzy collar being lighter and not contrasting as much as an engineer's black. Also, poor old engineers suffered long years In The Ranks-- no long service brooch here. (They also favored, Lord knows why, "Napoleon III" facial fuzzery. Yup-- sometime the HAIRCUT tells as much as the uniform. )

        The inscription reads

"der dankbare Doctor den freundloßen (sic) 'Patienten' " with the 1908 date and Kiel. His penmanship was appalling, and I'm sure many patients of his died horrible deaths from badly transcibed prescriptions!

From the contrast between the two medals, I'd say the Southwest Africa is steel. This doesn't help, as neither campaign nor commemorative medals are shown in Naval Lists.

I cannot make a match on that signature! Working on it!

        I'll be .... baaccccccccck.
