    Ulanen Tschapka

On the cusp of quite a nice deal with this piece, however "too good to be true" alarms going off on the price...thought I would throw it out in the open for opinions...enjoy!

Hmm..I have seen this one before somewhere. Is that a 2nd w/ gilt, or a 1/3 with silver chicken? The shape looks to be correct (sloping rear skull) and it has the large 1867 pattern mortar board top, the visor appears to be unusually short. But, these were sewn-on upside down, the reverse of a spiked helmet and they can push up quite a bit from sitting on shelves for many years. Liner is text-book Ulan Mannschaft. The plume is not Prussian pattern which has the hose-hair sewn into a "corn cob" type part for lack of a better way to describe it, and no German anything ever had that big embroidered "knob" at the base of the plume. The toggle on the top of the board for securing the Schnur is missing, as is the Feldziechen, but I am sure you know all this already. I would remove the plume from the equation and deduct the missing parts to see if its still a "deal". But it looks like a helmet I would be glad to have. Here is my Model 1867 Preußen Garde Ulan Regt 2 Mannschaft Tschapka. They look to be very similar. Tony http://www.kaisersbunker.com/dunkelblau/helmets/dbh31.htm
