A patriotic ring from 1914? Can you transpose what it says on the sides please? I can make out fatherland and that's about it.
            Thanks,
            Eric Gaumann

              Thanks

Thanks for your reply Eric. The left side is inscribed, "DHG" and "GAB ICH IN SCHWERERZEIT IHM COLD FUR DIESES EISEN" The right side is inscribed, "1914" and "DEM ALTEN VATERLAND DIE TREUE ZU BEWEISEN" Thanks, Jay

During ww1 in Germany those iron rings you received when you gave e. g. a golden ring to finance the war.

"...Gold gab ich für Eisen.." - Gold I gave for iron..

I wonder how many gold rings Obama would get to finance the Afghanistan war if he asked for them? Things were sure different in 1914. Ammersee

                    Ammersee,

the WW1 was to defend the homeland and all families had to sent their fathers and sons, millions.

Now the US Army is an Army of professionals fighting far away from the USA homeland...
