Horn is the classic Jäger badge of the Austro-Hungarian army, while the Kärntenkreuz in the middle suggests some sort of a veterans of that border fighting organization.

Here is a Portrait Photo showing the same Horn as a cap insignia, but with another emblem in the centre.

The photo is signed and dated 1934.

Bundesheer Jäger

it is the Jägerlandeswappen for Alpine Jäger, Jäger and cycle troops of the Austrian Bundesheer introduced on the 1st of January 1929. There were nine variations depending on the individual state and this one is from the state of Carinthia.

This particular badge would have been worn by members of the:

Kärntner Alpenjägerregiment Nr. 11
Kärntner Feldjägerbataillon zu Rad Nr. 5

The senior Bundesheer officer is an Oberst and by 1934 should have been wearing the newly introduced pattern of uniform and rank insignia similar to the old Imperial pattern.

Is the date 1918-19 on the cross also on the Bundesheer insigna? I thought this was a Heimwehr insigna...

Kärntner Kreuz

Mario,

the cross is a miniature of the Kärntner Kreuz für Tapferkeit utilised as the Carinthian Landeswappen.
