    Postal Medal

I picked up this Postal medal. It looks to be 28.5mm round with two rings. Any clue what it is for? Any other thoughts? Any idea what ribbon it would take? Doug

The medal shows Heinrich von Stephan the Generalpostmeister des Reiches:

There are a lot of other coins and medals for Heinrich von Stephan:

          OK What is it for?

Did this guy just come up with a bunch of medals that he gave himself to confound us years later or what? Doug

In his function as Generalpostmeister (Head of the German Mail) des Reiches Heinrich von Stephan organized the modern mail system in Germany. To honour him a lot of medals have been created.

Could of these been given out for some reason?

I am thinking that there were many people working for the German Postal Service at that time. Were these medals given to everyone or just German Postal Service workers or to specific Postal workers based on some criteria? Is there a specific ribbon known? Thanks Doug

Medal looks a lot like the regimental medals that were out in the early 1900's. Good question as to who got them and the color of the ribbon. For some reason, most of the early regimental medals I have come without ribbons and the ones that do mostly have red, white and black stripe ribbons. Mike

These medals are normally without any ribbon - not wear - only to have them like a special "coin".

If someone liked to wear them one could fix a loop on it. But the loop was not original struck with the medal.

One could buy these medals. They have not been awarded to someone.

Yes, I think they were more like commemorative tokens. Just a souvenir.

                      Wow! Thanks a bunch guys.

Yeah, I don't have my loop. My wife thinks that the loop was added later. I'm a Postie. I think it is cool. Worth the $10 I paid. Thanks again. Doug
