A State a Day- The Free Hansa Cities

Not quite a state but still interesting, the Hanseatic League cities of Hamburg, Bremen, and Luebeck. Show me what you've got.

          Hi Scott,

          "an unissued Hamburg Cross"

Why do you think, it is an unissued cross?

          Regards
          Uwe

                        Hansa 1814 piece

                        Hi Wild Card

I think the detail on this piece is astonishing! Just look at the (oak?) shrunk and the Hamburg Castle. What does the reverse look like (e.g. does it state "Ihm sei die Ehre" ? I thought I saw some other medal with that phrase in 2 parts (was it the Prussian 1866 medal?) The russian commemorative medal for the napoleonic wars also has a sentence like that... I have it somewhere...

Here is the reverse. You have a very good eye - these medals are beautifully executed. The engraver was Daniel Friedrich Loos, one of the very best of his time; and I believe that they were struck at the Berlin mint.

                          Best wishes,

                          Wild Card

Very nice medal, Wild Card. Do you have an award number for this one?

                              Hello VtwinVince,

Hessenthal/Schreiber states that 800 of these pieces were struck. However Nimmergut, citing P. Galperin’s work “Die Ehrenzeichen der Freien Hansestadt Bremen...” says that 800 pieces were ordered by Bremen, 3000 by Hamburg and 600 by Lubeck for a total of 4,400 pieces to cover 3,788 men. So, unless I am missing something in the translation (which is very possible ), there is quite a range of numbers on this award.

At the same time, both sources appear to agree that there were 12 gold medals awarded.

Thank you for the compliment on my piece and best wishes,

                              Wild Card
