This case came from a WWII veteran that fought from Normandy to the Elbe River and all badges, tinnies, & pins in the case were 1935-1945. This case does not look like anything from this period, but IMO does appear German although no marks or names can be seen as a reference. Can anyone help identify this case or date it to the 1st WW.

It looks like it could certainly well could be from the 1930-40's era, the catches are reminiscent of the era style as is the case. But by the same token it could very well be post war and at that not even German.
It's likely just a cutlery box of sorts or of some other obscure nature rather than in relation to a military theme in use.
Also, I think you'll find you have it upside down, the padded liner part is in the lid you can tell that by the catches.
