EK 1 1870 fake or good?

Hello Gentlements,

I’m not an expert in iron crosses of 1870 and i need your help because a 1st class is offered to me.
Instantly I had a bad feeling as I saw the pictures of the cross. Otherwise the price is good and i don’t want to let it go without asking the experts of 1870 crosses.

Here are the pictures and I would be very pleased about each assistance and opinion.

Looks like a Latvian copy/fake--new pin version, I haven't seen this one yet-anywhere!

I wouldn't spend a lot of money for this one if you really have to have it.

The rust on the core is too new. The frame looks to be of much later vintage, possibly TR era but without measurements I can't say for sure. The double loop and pin assembly looks to be more appropriate for a British or French cap badge. I am not familiar with that style of core.

I would look for a more 'text book' example.

Maybe the other guys will chime in with some thoughts.

I concur with Tiger1. The core appears to be artificially weathered/worn by using an abrasive of some sort. I've seen versions of the "hinged hairpin" style but this is interesting..

We seen this style before only with a different attachement. I have
it in my "fakes" file. I do not remember who originally posted it.

I think that was mine long ago, since sold, before this forum was created. The cores match.
What got me on the one just posted was how the frame is "benderish"; not coming to a sharper point in the center like my old one. The ribbing on my old one had finer/more numerous ribbing.. The one posted could be a re-framed core, w/almost laser-cut (more massive)frame.. Very interesting!

My first thought was >Latvian< but like all of us i never saw this setup on a Latvian.

Maybe we see here a piece of the "2008 Latvian Collection".
I didn't have it in my hands until now. I'll ask the seller for the crosses data.

This seems to be a very interesting piece (not for the own collection but for studying a new sort of copys)
The thread could have an interesting developement.
Later i'll post some more pictures of details.

IMO this is no rust.

These are color-pigmets normally used from scale modellers when they are aging and weathering their tank models.

Hi.
IMHO look at the 2 mismatched 'fingers' in the crown just right and left of the center one.
And the 'cotter pin' hasn't been lost after 140 years??
