Central Powers WW1 Commemorative: The Hindenburg Cross

Yes, the German Hindenburg Cross! Created 13 July 1934 in the last days of decrepit Generalfeldmarschall Reichspräsident von Hindenburg's life, I can find NO statutory regulation permitting award then on NON-German Central Powers veterans. That was rather starnge, since the other former allies all generously authorized international bestowal of THEIR medals for WW1 service.

However, Hindenburg Cross ribbons often turn up in Hungarian officers' mounted ribbon bar groups.

Other wearers of trifolds could have been:

    1) Saxon die-hard traditionalists, continuing to wear what had also been THEIR home style of ribbon into the 1870s. A few Saxon WW1 awards are STILL found on trifolds, worn by native Saxons.

    2) Veterans from annexed Austria. Again, though this was the traditional native Austrian style of ribbon, it was not common under the Third Reich, though it did exist.

    3) ??? recipients from Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Slovakia who had served in Central Powers armies in WW1. (These are not at all determined to have ever actually been AUTHORIZED.)

Austrians became eligible after the 1938 Anschluss, and ethnic Germans in other areas absorbed into the Thousand Year Reich AS "Germans" were eligible, awards to each of these new Reich subjects continuing into 1944 (for instance, to members of Italian-annexed South Tyrol).

Note that trifold ribbons are 40mm wide.

The reverse, showing a standard 1930s maker's marks. Many "Third Reich" trifolds are new fakes and will glow under blacklight. This is an original period ribbon with the standard hook and eye fitting.

Also, post-World War Two, Austria returned to trifolds, so WW1 veterans who got these post-Anschluss period could have them remounted.
