    Help on German rifles please.

Hi, I have a small collection of WWI rifles and want to purchase a typical German infantry rifle. I have a chance to buy a German Gew 98 or a 1914 German Kar. 98. I have limited funs, so my question is which rifle would be more representative of the typical German infantry of WWI? I know they were both used, but would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you! Dennis

The Gew 98 was the standard infantry weapon. The Kar 98a was issued to cavalry, artillery, pioneer and other specialist troops. Go with the Gewehr.

Dennis, if they are both of equal quality (original parts, etc) and at near the same price, go for the carbine as they are far more rare. A G98 can always be found later when your pockets are deeper.

I agree that the carbine is more collectible, but it is not more representative. The millions of foot soldiers slogged it out with the Gewehr 98 with Lange sight (the hump sight). Here is a Gewehr 98 with Lange sight, marked Oberndorf, 1916. Not pretty but its been there. Steve

And these guys would drink to that! Here is Adolf Rauhut (standing, upper left) with his friends. And a stack of 98s. Steve
