You can see the basic problem...the disc is too small.

I think you might be right in thinking that the case and the cross
did not start out together. I am no expert here as none of my
screwbacks are cased but from pictures I have seen, most seem to
fit a little better. It looks like they have been together for a long time.
The patina on the arms of the cross appear to match the indent in the case.------That being said, It is still a nice looking set. I would not
change the backing plates. It is a very nice cross and I would keep
it as original as possible. If this set were mine,and assuming that the case and cross do not belong together I personally would keep both
and at some point in time change out the cross for one that fits better.
