Need help with and EK II

A friend of mine just bought a large US WWI grouping and in it was this medal. My question is, is it period. I have never seen another like this and there is non pictured like it in teh Iron Time either. The quality of strike is very good, the centeris magnetic so it passes all the basic tests, but the large "W" has me perplexed.

Thanks for any help I get!

Hi Dav the loop is a replacement(and a bad one at that), when it was done I have no idea.

          Gary,

It almost looks as if a post WWI frame was added to a period core. The loop opened up to add the two halves would account for that as well. Like the frame once belonged to soemthing else and thenwas married to the core. Just a gues. Odd. Steve

            Hi Steve,

Thanks for the contribution. My question is why is the W so large? Have you ever seen that? As far as your theory goes I don't know to be honest with you. The medal itself seems symmetrical and the core is not loose in the frame.

            Cheers

I've not seen the large W, Gary. And not seeing the seems, I was trying to think why it might be so large. It does seem strange, doesn't it. But you have the best view and could easily tell if the piece might be reframed or is nice & tight. Steve
