Stay away from 1870s that have a crown that looks like this one.
The large 9th bead usually is easy to spot because it gets polished
from wear compared to the smaller ones around it.

If you do a search on it, you will find a lot of discussion about
these fakes.

having read both these threads , as well as the others on the 1870 , i thought they would help. But it seems that there is alot of differening ideas out there. different dies, different stamps, let alone 1870s being made right into the 1920s .Having read the threads its just not a clear cut issue with these crosses,different crosses cant just be dissmissed
SO..... The one thing ive worked out, is that if the great minds here are still debating what is correct with out any resolution ......then i will stick to collecting just WW1 crosses !!

Yeah, it's a minefield. Unless you get one that is 100% good (I was lucky with mine for example), then I can understand the sentiment. I do not think it is realistic to think you can "collect" 1870 EK1s, but I am happy to have a real one. It is the jewel in my collection even moreso than my 1813 EK2.

Hi Sven

You will notice that I was heavily involved in both the threads you posted links to - and at that point in time, much like yourself, I had no idea what exactly I should be looking for.

A few years have passed since then though, and while I certainly don't consider myself a 'great mind' ... I think you will be fairly safe if you avoid anything remotely contentious like the cross I posted in those threads and stick to one of these two examples.

These two types are not particularly difficult to research for period provenance & I don't think there is a knowledgeable member here who would challenge the authenticity of the classic 'I Wagner' and 'Godet' marked crosses below....
