    cloth question

Hi, I have a cloth sleeve insignia on feldgrau backing which seems to have some sort of ' lacquer coating'( for want of a better word)on the actual stitching of the insignia motif ,it is quite stiff to the touch like it has been starched but not on the reverse or the feldgrau , could this be done to stop 'fluffing' or fraying ??? I have never seen this before has anyone else?( go check your cloth pieces)!! Any others out there? Ferg1

    Ferg,

Yes, this was commonly done, especially on navy sleeve rates. I can't recall seeing it on anything Feldgrau or on an issue piece. I would have to go through my collection to check. May I ask what insignia it is?

      Sleeve insignia

Hi Chip, thanks for your comments, the sleeve insignia in question is a Luftschiffer crew badge, oval feldgrau with ' starched ' yellow zeppelin motiv. Some original stitching around the edge still remains where it was attached and interestingly ,under an eye glass there are a few strands of red fibres caught in the weave . Ferg1

        ferg1,

Just be careful. These badges are faked and quite well done at that.
