    WW1 U-boat badge, geniue ??

    Hi guys,

normaly I post in the ww2 area of the forum but from time to time I also got ww1 stuff.
This time I was offered a U-boat badge were I would need your help.
The catch looks wartime repaired. The badge is a little bit worn.

What would you think, is it a good one ???

If so, what could be the maker and also the market value would be interesting for me as I not planning to keep it.

    Many thanks for looking, Jens

                  Jens,

I don't own one of these so I will defer to the experts but a couple of observations.

From the pics, the metal almost looks like brass vice gilded bronze typically associated with these pieces.

Second, although the most common manufacturer of these pieces was Walter Schott and his pieces certainly lacked the detail of say a pilot's or observer's badge, this piece still lacks some important definition. The eagles on either side of the internal cross of the crown cannot even be distinguished as eagles.

Further, the leaves lack definition that should be there on the wreath. The pin is obvious as a replacement but what really causes me to look this over is pic #5. There is clearly a seam to the badge that you would not normally see on imperial pieces. Those are my observations and I now defer to the experts on why these would be exceptions on this piece if good. Steve

The striations on the reverse appear to be faked too. The details to the front are lacking. I see evidence of casting on the wreath.
