The fact that a fake 1870 Iron Cross or any fake Iron Cross, sold for an extreme amount of money on eBay is hardly a shocking fact. That doesn't change the fact that it is fake.

If people didn't fall for fakes, then fakers would have no reason to make them.

Agree. Look at the sad amount of money spent on the fake PlMs this past week on eBay. Pitiful.

Maybe the way i wrote that last post sounded like i was being critical , if it did then i apologise 100% , i never doubted for 1 minute that the opinions of the people who replied to the original post were anything but accurate .
What i intended to put across is exactly what you said. Ottomaton - how people who do not have access to profesional opinions can be taken for a ride. I am curious to see how many people are as shocked as i was.

Unfortunately i was one of those people but i bought it as a copy and only to bring a bit of colour to my very black collection . Since my 2 hensiatic crosses arrived today they bring all the colour i need . So needless to say my one will find its way back to old ebayland... Might even make a tiny profit....Hehehehe

            Stomper,

The Hanseatic crosses are beautiful and would be welcome in any collection. even the modified one for the square ribbon. Makes it unique. In my opinion, you did well with those. Steve

No sympathy here for those who want to buy rare collectibles for bargain prices and without any knowledge of the subject. The get exactly what they pay for. There is a monumental amount of information, via the internet, shows, collecting associans, etc. The people who want $3500 Pour le Merite's, $2000 Knight's Crosses, and rare prinzen 1870 Iron Cross Cased sets have certainly not done any "due dilligence' in their buying. I am sure they are happy with their purchases and would never consider paying the 'high prices' the professional dealers charge.

How true Bob. And what is even sadder is that many that make these purchases will convince themselves these are good pieces. I know I have felt that way until reality sets in. But that is what makes this forum so great. We get educated and can keep away from the fakes to boot. Steve
