Here is my Hansen. It has a smaller backplate and was made before they received their DRGM protection for the design. Their DRGM was awarded in Dec. 1914, so this is an early one.

Reverse. Note the plate is marked DRGM Angem. (the abbreviation for angemeldet) and means DRGM pending. The silver marks were there but were removed. The cross and back are silver. Maybe a lower grade than 800 so they just removed them.

Here is a nice convex cross that I bought because it was 900 silver. Yes it is cracked and repainted, but a surprise awaited me when I examined it.

Very nicely made with the mark on the pin. Well, one of the marks.

When I examined it with a loupe, I found these hallmarks. They are Austrian government hallmarks for an item MADE in Austria.

Hmm....maybe a little closer. The diamond with a minute (and invisible here) "FR" is the tax paid mark, The "A" is the mark for Vienna, meaning it was made there. The large diamond with the head of Diana is the silver mark. Normally this mark would have the grade of silver as well, but I guess they could not fit it in since these hallmarks are only about 1mm each. Above the two diamonds and below the "A" is "R & I" a poorly stamped R & N. Stogieman said it was the nicest Rothe he has seen in years.

Imperial Quest, thanks for keeping your eyes open for these. As for the second class prinzen, the seller describes it as "displays the characteristics of having been made by the firm of Rothe & Neffe". I find this interesting, since to the best of my knowledge, the characteristics of a prinzen second class or any class Rothe & Neffe are not known. The first class that Stogieman endorses is apparently an Austrian made Iron Cross, I don't doubt that they made Iron Crosses in Austria, but to say it is a Rothe & Neffe, is at least to me, a reach. I try not to be toooo skeptical where these crosses are concerned, but those crosses that are generally described as a Rothe & Neffe are generally something else(AWS, Meybauers, Unknowns, etc.). I'm not questioning Stogieman's expertise on this matter, he might know something about these that I don't, I hope so, but I would love to see some hard core proof to prove that their is a Rothe & Neffe Iron Cross. I hope thier is one, but a cross made in Austria, or a trifold ribbon does not make it a Rothe & Neffe. If so, then I got a few of um'. I think the first class or one just like it was discussed on another forum, where I think Stogieman might be a Moderator, can't remember for sure. If Motorhead reads this, then maybe he can add his two cents, for he seems to be very knowledgable about these Imperial Crosses. I'm afraid the thirst for the Grail continues.........................Russel
