    Baffle Back EK1 question

Hi , I recently purchased this 800 marked EK1 1914 baffle back vaulted cross. I can't identify the makers mark in my references, were these crosses attributable to one maker only and does anyone know who that was? I've tried to scan the maker mark but my camera is not brilliant. It is a raised, quite ornate crest in the centre of the reverse. A friend of mine has a similar cross with the same mark. Cheers.

I have a screwback like this, but no mark. Is the center on yours iron? (Mine isn't.)

                Hi,

Glenn's example is, I'm pretty sure, an "AWS". Look at the central raised portion of the maker's mark and you should see the letters in raised relief. Unfortunately, I can't tell you who AWS stands for (I thought I heard once but can't remember). My example is highly vaulted and has exceptionally good detailing on the obverse (the core is iron on mine).

                Regards
                Mike K

PS: I think this should be on the Imperial Forum?
                Regards
                Mike

Righto. I'll copy it over there. This isn't Meybauer's mark.

I'm pretty sure this is Rothe and Neff of Vienna.

I think I have the same 1914 EK1 as Glenn R's. Here are the scans. However I am not sure if the manufacture of this EK1 is Rothe and Neff of Vienna. My EK1 quality is good but not as good as I would expected EKs made by Rothe.

                      best regards

Hannibal, that's the same maker's mark as mine, much clearer on your scan. I've compared it to Rothe and Neffe and I don't think it is the same. The obverse detailing on mine isn't too clear on the scan but is very crisp, comparable to 1870's. The crown is very sharp.

In addition to EK's, this mystery maker also produced very high quality wound badges and even Turkish awards often awarded to
German troops, i.e. the War Medal of 1915, which is often incorrectly called the Gallipoli Star or Iron Crescent.
This WAS a wartime manufacturer, and not primarily a postwar vanity producer such as Meybauer.
