was there a hessen unit with an austrian related "history" (perhaps the austrian kaiser was the comander etc.)
so you have the most possible unit for the guys medalbar!
        and it is nice! christian

Its a nice bar. Not usual to see Austrian awards on a Hessian bar.

Nice one! We should try to find out if there was an unit from Hessen who fought on the eastern front together with austrians. Austrian bravery awards are not too common on german medal-bars.

What exactly are the medals on it? I only know two (the EK and the Honor Cross), and I recognize the Austrian ribbon (but not the Austrian medal). What are the others?

Rick is taking an extended vacation from the forum, but he posts elesewhere on the net.
The Germans laced Austrian infantry and artillery units heavily with cadre NCOs after 1916. While you can't be certain, given the lack of orders and the low end Austrian bravery medal, it could be one of these Unterofficers who had this bar on his SA uniform (note lack of LS medal)-or a Landser who served next to Austrian units.

                          The Medals are...

                          Hi George,

                          The medals are as follows;
                          1; 1914EKII
                          2; Hessen Silver Bravery medal
3; 1914-18 Combattants war service cross, (Instituted 1933)
4; Emporer Karl of Austria Bravery medal ( "fortitvdini" on reverse)
                          5; 1914-18 Austro-Hungarian service medal

Oh! so that where Rick has got to....

So this Chap would have been a NCO and would have seen a fair bit of action, to be awarded three bravery decorations.
Anyone have any idea which unit he may have been with?

Any Information at all would be appreciated!

                          Cheers
                          Paul

Do the Hessians tend to put their state's medals in front of Prussian medals of honor? If so, would it be unreasonable to think that this man was a Prussian who was fighting with the Hessians in the East with the Austrians at his side? Is this even a plausible situation? I know the Bavarians put their bravery medals in front sometimes.
