      Freikorps Goldingen

badges are ok. the cloth is not. the tabs should be folded over and glued on the back. the folds ideally should be bevelled at the corners so the edges more or less meet. the stiffening material should be heavy burlap-like material sized with a varnish, amber or rabbit-skin glue.

Having said that, I think these collars were most often worn directly on the collar, without tabs.

          Hi Tommy

They came in silver and gold. But, the colour doesn't mean anything. As they were a generic style oakleaf, the slightly mismatched pair is likely just different strikes put together by a supplier, who didn't notice. There isn't that much difference between them, that I can see. Several Freikorps bought "off-the-shelf" badges that were ready-made, either because they lacked funds or were in a hurry. Freikorps Goldingen was one of them.

I'd leave them on cloth for display purposes.

As I explained in my email to you, Tommy, the selection of repros on offer by Militaria Agent are old ones, made in the 60s and he acquired the lot from the maker before he died. There was some speculation that they might have been commemorative pieces for surviving vets, like the collars von Loewenfeld had made for the III. Marine Brigade reunion in the 60s. This might just be some bit of wishful thinking, though. I corresponded with him a couple of times last year about these Freikorps items and he told me that he thought a couple might actually be authentic. But, since they all came together from the repro maker's estate, he decided to just sell them all as reproductions.

It's hard to say about these Goldingen collars. They are well made. Several well-known dealers like eMedals, Weitze and Phillips have sold similar pairs mounted the same way. As I said before, I really don't like the cloth backing. It they were mounted on cloth tabs at all, they'd be black wool or velvet.
